
1980s Soviet metal pin of Princess Nesmeyana (несмеяна царевна сказка), also known as The Princess Who Never Smiled, is a Russian folk fairy tale collected by Alexander Afanasyev in Narodnye russkie skazki, as tale number 297. It is a tale for children that teaches that honest work is always rewarded.
In the tale, Princess Nesmeyana is the saddest princess in the world. She did not know how to smile or laugh heartily, but only sobbed all the time at the window and was upset over trifles. The unfortunate king decides to give his daughter in marriage to someone who can make Nesmeyana laugh. Many who wished came to the palace, but attempts to make the princess smile ended in failure. Only the arrival of a simple worker made the girl smile...
