1980s Soviet metal pin of a drumming clown with reference to Russian circus (ЦИРК).
Russians have viewed the circus as an art form that is culturally on par with ballet and opera for over a century. In the Soviet era, circus performances are viewed as an egalitarian form of entertainment to be enjoyed by the masses. Consequently, circus schools such as the Moscow State College for Circus and Variety Arts in 1927, sprung up to teach Soviet children the necessary arts to become world-class circus performers. In circus schools, it was not intended to be fun places for kids to spend their days. On the contrary, even the youngest children were made to treat it like a job, working hard to perfect their skills for hours every day after finishing their school lessons.
