1980s pin of a Kazakhstan woman sheafing for bread (казахстанский хлеб) from the "virgin land". In the post-war era of the Soviet era, thousands of people were mowed down by hunger and the country desperately needed bread. In 1954, the historic decision of Nikita Khrushchev to develop virgin and fallow lands in the east of the Union has allowed Kazakhstan to become the grain capital of the Union
