1980s commemorative Soviet metal pin of Saratov (Сара́тов), a city in which Yuri Gagarin, the first human being in space, landed in 1961 upon returning from his 108-minute orbit around the earth. Until the end of the Soviet Union in 1991, the Soviet authorities designated Saratov a 'closed city' which excluded all foreigners due to its military importance as the site of a vital facility manufacturing military aircraft.
