VOSKHOD 1 PIN

1970s commemorative Soviet metal pin of Voskhod 1 (Восход-1), meaning Sunrise in Russian. It was the 7th crewed Soviet space flight and has orbited the Earth 15 times. In the history of crewed spaceflight, Voskhod 1 has achieved a number of 'firsts' in October 1964:

• the 1st space flight to carry more than one crewman into orbit
• the 1st flight without the use of spacesuits as there isn't enough room in the compartment for the cosmonauts to wear spacesuits during their flight
• the 1st to carry either an engineer or a doctor into outer space

Politics played a prime role in crew selection. The original Voskhod had been designed to carry two cosmonauts, but Soviet politicians pushed the Soviet space program into squeezing three cosmonauts into Voskhod 1, hence the mission was widely perceived as a 'propaganda mission'.

During the course of the Voskhod 1 flight, the Soviet Union has also experienced a bloodless coup. Soviet Premier Nikita Sergeyevich Khrushchev was dismissed by Leonid Brezhnev while having a vacation in Crimea, and Brezhnev has secretly taken over power in the USSR while Khrushchev was away.
